The Perfect Chair
Ok, it might not be perfect for you, but for this girl, it's my McDreamy. I've been looking for a chair for my bedroom to serve so many purposes I thought it would be impossible to find. I wanted the chair to be high enough to sit at my desk, but most office chairs were so cold or unstylish I couldn't bear to look at them any longer. I started looking at dining chairs, but they were either too low, too formal, or too boring. Living room chairs? Maybe... most of those were too big as well. But, this chair from The Odd Chair Company? PERFECT!!
High enough to sit at my desk with arms low enough that they won't get in the way, a cushy seat with great tufting and character, simple and small enough to fit in my teeny room, and not too formal but definitely still sophisticated. It was love at first sight. The only problem? The company is in London. *sigh* How on earth do I always manage to find myself in a long distance relationship? If anyone knows of a similar chair here in the states, please share! I'm afraid my McDreamy will have to wait...

Room of the Week 9.28
Wow - Where did September go? I guess Fall really IS here! And since I skipped my room of the week last week, I figured I'd throw in a few of my favorites featuring some of the Fall's hottest colors - apricot, mustard, plum and olive... hmmm, anyone hungry for some design?
Currently obsessed with grey, the walls of this room make me swoon. I love the mustard yellow and apricot as well ~ such hot colors right now and great together.
Another plum colored room for all of us to add to the list, I loved the idea of comfy stools set around the table. The low seating also allows for that low hanging pendant lamp to be a focal point in the room. Did you notice how the walls are unfinished with the paint? I love that. I want to paint my walls to match my dinner party themes!... ;)
From the UK comes a bit of drama - the minimalistic office/study? All black furniture against an olive green wall with pops of white on that rich wood floor... it's kinda yummy, don't you think?

The House in Liguria
A while back I began emailing back and forth with Madison about her home in Liguria (yes, Italy!) and the trials and tribulations of remodeling rooms built in 1918. She asked me for advice on her dining room, and after collecting some inspiration and thinking about what would work best for her modern taste, this is what I came up with!
I started by going through my books of rooms for ideas and inspiration, and found a few spaces that went along with my vision.
Keeping in mind that we have an ocean between us, I tried to keep the designs simple enough that Mads could find similar pieces in Italy, hence some more 'generic' brands like Ikea, West Elm, Crate & Barrel, etc.
This is the dining room as is is now:
As I noted in my earlier post, I was using the blue tiles and walls as a base color, and wanted to add orange accents to the room, which Madison had already begun to do with the curtains. My first suggestion? An entirely different dining table would help open the room immediately. Something with clean lines and a more modern style to reflect Mads' taste...
From clockwise from top: Gervasoni table (an Italian/American company!), Ikea chair and table, Room & Board Parson's Table, and West Elm Circle Chair.
I also want to add some personality to the room! So a few more ideas for the main dining area...
I'm a little bit obsessed with the options for curtains in this room. I currently love the orange drapes that are hanging, but think they could be taken a step further by combining them with something a bit more casual and fun like the ones above from Anthropologie. I also think that combining a modern table with some chairs in a more classic shape is important. My favorite option might be the ones above from Brocade Home show showcase a classical shape in modern bentwood. I also think the chairs Madison currently has will work for now just fine! A simple jute rug (nothing too fancy) might also be nice under the dining table just to lend some texture and warmth. I picked out these ones from West Elm, but really anything will do! If a great antique rug (nice and worn and faded and full of character) popped up, that would also be wonderful! What else would look more perfect on an Italian table than warm orange-hued urns filled with some mossy plants? A small collection of miscellaneous pots would add a bit of warmth to the room for sure.
Madison has two different areas for sideboards in the room. This is one (above), and this is the other (below).
As you can see, one side is much too monotone with all the silver/grey and the other side very traditional with the antique chest and painting by her husband's grandfather. My first suggestion? Switch the furniture around so that the chest is on the main wall of the room, under the mirror. My second suggestion? Get a sideboard for the other side of the room that is much more simple!
On the antique chest, try a modern tray like this one from Plantation. The glassware will pop off the tray and you want to try and mix up the old with the new a bit. Another favorite trick for trays is to find an old mirror at the thrift store to use ~ they provide an interesting shape!
You'll also notice that all the items on the sideboard right now are the same height. This is decorating 101 ~ make sure when you accessorize you have variations of height! It makes a huge difference. Try a variety of candle holders. This is just one option from CB2, but don't be afraid to mix and match old and new candle holders with uniform color candlesticks.
For the other sideboard, I have a few ideas...
I like this piece from cb2 as an affordable option, as well as this one from Porta Romana in the UK.
I photoshopped some accessories together for some more detailed ideas...
This first one features a pair of lamps from Jamie Young that incorporate the orange and blue color scheme while adding more pattern to the room. In order to keep with the modern look, however, we can offset them with the collection of silver vases from Jayson Home & Garden. The bust (also from Jayson) provides a good balance between modern and classic as well.
The second option is a bit more along the lines of what I think Madison might have been going for. These classic lamps from Crate and Barrel are sophisticated and sexy. I also found this mirror at Oly that I loved because it picks up on the blue of the walls and adds a bit of texture.
The best part of these two console ideas is that obviously Mads can mix and match any of these options to create a look that's right for her!
One last thing ~ let's revisit the drapes! While I like the rich orange ones that are up, I think we could do better.
Adding some pattern to this room would be nice, and the drapes would be a great place to do it! Using a more modern floral pattern like the one above from Anthropologie is one option. I also think vertical stripes would lengthen the room a bit, and either of these patterns from Kravet would work (or a mix of both?). Also, as a simple way to add a bit of texture for now, placing some sheers under the orange drapes that give more depth and subtle pattern would be a quick fix. The ones shown above are from Pottery Barn and are just enough to lend some personality to the window.

Nobody Does it Better...
Whenever I need a bit of design inspiration I head over to the Woodson & Rummerfield showroom here in LA, where their small little space is always being transformed. It wakes me up faster than a double tall soy latte and energizes my creativity. So, I thought I'd share a few designs from their showroom in case you need that mid-week pick-me-up as much as I do!
Tomorrow - a big post! I've been working on a design board for MAds' modern Italian dining room (which is why my posts have been a bit light this week), so be sure to come back tomorrow!

Lovin' This Table...
I absolutely love the lines of this table from Cottage & Bungalow. What, you don't like the lime green? Don't worry, it comes in a huge variety of beachy and neutral colors. This style is also available in a smaller coffee table...
And a side table...
Fall Fabrics From...
IKEA! Ok, I know. I've been posting about them a lot. But, jeez, they're stepping it up over there and if you haven't been to an Ikea since they started carrying fabric by the yard GO NOW!! (But be warned, you will want to buy a yard of everything.) I was just there the other day and saw that they brought out some new patterns for the Fall. I looked for them online and found some other ones that I didn't even see in the store! Here are my top favorites...
The Annabella Collection at $4.99 a yard.
The Patricia Collection at $7.99 a yard (much better in person, I must say).
I'd like to call this one "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend..." but it's actually called PS Grea (whatever that means).
And lastly, I like the pattern of these two in the Katrin collection because they seem to follow along with the tribal/ikat textiles we're seeing a lot of these days... only $5.99 a yard.
With their prices being so low, this is such an easy way to have a stash of fabrics to swap out as bed coverlets, wall hangings, fabric 'headboards', to throw over your kitchen table or sofa back... really, do you need any other excuses to just go right now?

Textile Coasters on Etsy
Last week when scouring the bins of scarfs at one of my favorite thrift stores I thought to myself "how on earth can I make these into something?" Most of them were torn or stained just enough to make them unwearable, and without the time or energy to invest in yet another project at the moment, I abandoned them. But, thanks to Sidney Ann's shop on Etsy, I've been re-inspired!
This smart chickadee from Seattle makes coasters from vintage scarfs, fabrics, and wallpaper. Have a favorite scarf that's been worn too many times? Send it to her and she'll create a set of four coasters just for you. Have some extra fabric that's just not enough to do anything with? Now your favorite patterns can last forever!
You can contact her through her Etsy store, which you should check out anyway for coasters in fun and traditional patterns. Oh, and as a side note ~ coasters are one of those easy little gifts that almost everyone can use. Great for a housewarming present!

I Love...
This lamp from the UK-based company Porta Romana
The shape, the size, the color, the texture, the fun but solid ceramic bauble-style... Yep, I want a pair.

Fall is Falling
Today, I closed the window in my room for the first time since moving here in July. Fall is in the air! So when I saw this painting from Andrew Douglas Underwood, I had to post it...
His paintings manipulate shapes from nature (leaves, butterflies, birds) into pieces like this that become whatever you want them to be! This one reminds me of warm fall colors in Seattle when all the leaves change and drop ~ I can't wait to visit in October!
Thanks to Oh Joy! for her post on this talented artist, which is what led me to his site in the first place.

Vintage Inspiration
A while ago I filed this image away as inspiration for chairs that might just complete me (or at least my dining room). I love the classic french cafe chairs that I have now seen popping up everywhere, but now I'm feeling a little depressed because even the Starbucks down the street has them (watch out! i might just sneak a pair home!). When chairs go corporate America I tend to lost a little interest ~ I like to keep my style a bit more unique.
BUT...!
Today I happened to stumble on the chairs in a totally different finish and I am completely back to loving them!
Available through the Sundance Catalog, the khaki green finish on these is amazing AND unique! It also comes in the classic steel or a nice shiny red. Vive le Cafe Chair!
Pretty as a Peacock - Part 2!
A few months back, I wrote how peacocks were popping up everywhere in design (see that posting here), and the trend isn't letting up! And, since it's become one of my own little obsessions, I thought I'd highlight some more pretty peacock items.
Wouldn't you love to have a peacock around the house? Ok, maybe not, but what a cute little wall decal to add to a room! This one is from Vinyl Wall Art on Etsy.
Available at Elsewares, these peacock paper goods are fun and fancy.
Perch your rings on this pretty but subtle peacock from Doe.
Peacock feathers in my favorite deep teal make this affordable pillow from Urban Outfitters a winner.
This print from Steven Harrington is a little bit folk, a little bit pop, and a lot of cool.
I am DYING to line one wall of my bedroom in this wallpaper from Wook Kim whose tasteful and formal design is offset by a peacock popping his little head out of the pattern. Love it!
And, last but not least, I of course have to promote my own two favorite peacocks of the moment - this porcelain pair that I brought home and are currently residing on a bookshelf in my home, but are also available for purchase on my Etsy shop! I love the gold luster details on them, and they look especially good juxtaposed on the different shelves at the moment.

Speaking of Ikea...
I get a lot of people asking if I know a good place to find vintage medicine cabinets, and answer is... NO! They're impossible. But, I do know that Ikea has a really good one that might just do the trick!
You might recognize it from the Making it Lovely blog where Nicole used the smaller version of it in her bathroom renovation...
If I happen to run across any more ideas, I'll be sure to post them!

Contrast = Cool
One of my most favorite things right now? The contrast of white lacquer or acrylic with dark wood.
High contrast in interior design can create some great drama. I love it so much that I bought this piece from Ikea that is a part of its Effektiv office series (and a pain in the ass to put together!) just because it was an affordable option to having a piece that I've been craving for a while - dark wood on the body and glossy white drawers. I've seen a few pieces like this for hundreds (or thousands!) more, but you can't beat the Ikea pricing!
I also found this gorgeous tray on Violet featuring a macassar ebony, bent plywood, and high-gloss resin combo that makes for a very cool piece.
I have a feeling this is a design that'll be popping up in my blogs for a while!
