Style (E)scapes: The Makeover

A few weeks ago, I asked readers to submit to me their closet dilemmas, and this is one that I decided to tackle. Cris came to me with her list of requests and requirements, along with this:
A small, outdated bathroom in the master bedroom that will soon become her dream closet! The space measures 60"x90", with a doorway that can be adjusted to either side or size. Cris has already picked out dark bamboo flooring and white crown and base molding that will match the rest of the home remodel they are working on. Her requests?

*1. Everything gets hung - she's not a folder!
*2. There needs to be room for a laundry bag, luggage, boots/outerwear, and purses/accessories.
*3. No wire baskets. (I hear ya Cris!)
*4. It's the only place in the home that will be 'hers' - girl it up!
*5. A place for a few paintings she's loving, and possibly wallpaper and an ottoman.
*6. A fabulous lighting fixture, and a full length mirror.
*7. BUDGET!

Well, Cris... here's what I came up with! (Excuse the crude rendering that is SO not to scale!)

The entrance to the closet, and the back wall measure around 5', so the closet isn't wide, but it is deep! Using the back end of the room for small furniture pieces, and the sides for hanging makes the most sense. The wallpaper is Cris' selection, and a personal favorite of mine. The small wardrobe is mirrored, but opens up for small accessories storage like belts and jewelry, from Ikea. The small studded pouf adds a touch of glam, as does the amber glass chandelier, which brings the chocolate out of the flooring. The art on the wall was provided by Cris as part of her inspiration - you can find it right here!

As for storage - at the ends of each hanging section, I suggest some shelving - just large enough to tuck away more shoes or purses up top, and have a space for luggage below. Notice the little nook on the left? I love the idea of creating a mini vanity space on one side - shelving up high, a small mirror and vanity area for jewelry, and just one drawer with room for a laundry basket beneath.
As for the entry to the room - I adore the idea of curtains vs. doors. Doors take up too much space, having to swing in or out, while curtains add drama and height to a room as shown above. Another option for the closet itself would be a large leaning floor mirror to open the space up even more, and a larger ottoman centered in the room. Accessories could be hung on hooks on either side of the mirror.

One final suggestion:

When choosing wallpaper, think about possibly using something with less color, so as to not overwhelm the clothes! The Topkapi pattern shown in the closet above would be a perfect example of this. Of course, if you can handle it, a dash of color is never a bad thing. A few more of my favorites are the mums from Linda Barker, slightly girlish and delicate florals by Mode, and a fun pop of chartreuse from LLB. Happy decorating Cris, and good luck!
