On The Cheap: CB2 Goes Empirical

If you've read my blog enough, you know that I work for a very original home store here in LA called Empiric. When I first started there, I didn't quite understand the aesthetic... it's somewhere between Midcentury Modern Vintage meets Mad Scientist accented with lots of steel storage, gorgeous lamps, and truly original pieces, including designs of their own.

Of course, when you're creating your own look, it's only a matter of time until it becomes a trend.

Flipping through the latest CB2 catalog, I noticed a lot of pieces that look similar to the ones we carry in the store - for a lot less. Of course, if we could all afford vintage, we'd much rather have that unique piece in our home than a reproduction. (At least I know I would!) But, for those on a limited budget... check out these knockoffs, and let me know what you think!

Photography lamp - $99.95

We carry a few lamps similar to this style - both photography lamps and vintage stage lamps like these...

Aren't they gorgeous?

Alchemy stool - $129

This look is very similar to some pieces we come across from time to time for the store. This aesthetic would fit right in to Empiric... if it were vintage! Imagine it with a worn wood top and steel base...

Acacia Wood Dresser - $599

Usually our vintage pieces get a nice coat of gorgeous lacquer to make them new again. This midcentury modern style dresser is similar in style to pieces we might carry, but you get the beautiful wood tone instead (yeah, it's veneer, which is why it's so cheap).

Longneck Vases - $6.95 each

Our display shelves are packed with lab glass, including some similar to these 'vases'. We put ours in vintage and new lab stands to keep them steady, but they do look pretty cool in a cluster.

I have to hand it to the CB2 designers - at least they're trying to make their lines a bit more original. Seems like all the big shops are doing a little reinventing to keep up with the ever growing savvy of their customers these days!
